About Me

ENGLISH  /  DEUTSCH  /  ITALIANO :

Andreas Lüthi (born 1961 in Switzerland) grew up in Switzerland and studied in Zurich, where he later completed his doctorate. Since 2016 he has maintained a studio in Uesslingen (Switzerland).

His artistic work today is structured around three interconnected series: ORIGIN, TRACE and TRUE STORY. Together these bodies of work form a coherent exploration of one central question: how time can be made visible in painting.

Rather than representing time symbolically, Lüthi approaches it through three complementary dimensions: action, trace and counting.

ORIGIN — the moment

The series ORIGIN represents the beginning.

Each work is created through a single, irreversible action, usually lasting only seconds. Paint, gesso and sometimes sand are placed on the canvas and transformed through one continuous movement of the artist’s body.

There is no composition in the traditional sense and no later correction. The gesture records an immediate event — a moment in time fixed in matter.

These paintings function as traces of an action: a direct imprint of physical movement, gravity and material resistance. The canvas becomes a surface where time condenses into a single instant.

ORIGIN therefore marks the starting point of Lüthi’s artistic process — the first manifestation of time.

TRACE — time as trace

The series TRACE continues where ORIGIN begins.

While ORIGIN focuses on the initial gesture, TRACE explores the visible traces left behind by human intervention. Through lines, grids, layered surfaces and controlled disruptions, the works reveal the interaction between material, colour and time.

The paintings often incorporate sand, pigments and epoxy. Cracks, overlaps and structural tensions become part of the image, recording the history of their own making.

Time in TRACE is neither a single moment nor a chronological sequence. It survives as a trace — a visible memory of action embedded in matter.

The works can be understood as fields of accumulated decisions and transformations, where process remains present long after the action itself has ended.

TRUE STORY — writing time

The third series, TRUE STORY, approaches time in a different way.

Here Lüthi literally writes time by painting sequences of numbers on the canvas. The numbers follow one continuous progression and therefore form a chronological record. Each painting represents a fragment of an endless narrative.

This work continues the conceptual path initiated by the Polish artist Roman Opalka (1931–2011), who dedicated the last 46 years of his life to painting the sequence of numbers from 1 toward infinity in his monumental series OPALKA 1965 / 1 – ∞.

Opalka connected the passage of time directly with his own existence. His paintings were not simply images but records of lived duration.

Andreas Lüthi pays tribute to this radical artistic gesture while developing it further. In his works the numerical sequences unfold on surfaces that are materially and visually rich — often layered with sand, colour or epoxy.

Through this approach the numbers do not exist in an empty conceptual space. They emerge from textured grounds that evoke matter, landscape and geological depth.

Each painting therefore becomes a page in an endless visual chronicle — a “true story” written through time itself.

Time as a trilogy

Together the three series form a unified artistic system:

ORIGIN — time as instant
 TRACE — time as trace
TRUE STORY — time as chronology

Action, trace and number become three different ways of experiencing the same phenomenon.

Rather than depicting events or narratives, Lüthi’s paintings explore the deeper structure of temporality itself — how time appears through gesture, through its visible traces, and through the endless progression of numbers.

Exhibitions and projects

Andreas Lüthi has exhibited internationally in cities including New York, Salzburg, Zurich, Lugano, Munich, Karlsruhe and various locations in Italy.

In 2022 he participated in the Venice Biennale as part of the exhibition Personal Structures at Palazzo Bembo, where he presented his work in a dedicated exhibition space.

MACAL — Museo Arte Contemporanea Andreas Lüthi

In August 2024, Andreas Lüthi opened his own museum for contemporary art in Orsara di Puglia (Italy): MACAL — Museo Arte Contemporanea Andreas Lüthi.

The museum is located in a renovated sixteenth-century palazzo that once served as a prison. The building now functions as a space for contemporary artistic dialogue, presenting Lüthi’s work while also hosting exhibitions by other artists.

MACAL reflects Lüthi’s long-term vision of creating an independent platform where artistic research, experimentation and international exchange can take place.

Land Art project

In October 2025, Andreas Lüthi completed a Land Art project in Roccarainola near Naples.

The project was realised with the support of Prof. Pasquale Lettieri, art critic and professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli, who played a key role in enabling the work.

This intervention extended Lüthi’s interest in time and material processes into the landscape itself, where natural transformation and geological duration become part of the artwork.

TRUE STORY — Zeit schreiben

I dipinti incorporano spesso sabbia, pigmenti e resina epossidica.

Mostre e progetti
